Chepstow House School

World Book Day 2015

This year, instead of just celebrating World Book Day, Chepstow House School had a ‘World Book Week’.  The aim of the week was to promote the wonderful reading that goes on within the school by inviting published authors, illustrators and storytellers to come and speak with and entertain the children.  Alongside the special guests, Chepstow House also held its first ever Read-a-thon.  This was in aid of Real Action -a local London charity based in Kensington and Chelsea who help disadvantaged children learn to read.

To start off proceedings, the school welcomed Gabby Dawnay and Alex Barrow.  They entertained the children with a special assembly.  Gabby read their two published books - London Calls and A Possum’s Tail while Alex drew live illustrations.  The children thoroughly enjoyed the stories and were keen to purchase the books signed by the author and illustrator. Other visitors to the school included Trisha Krauss - a children’s author and illustrator who has worked alongside Lauren Child the creator of Charlie and Lola and Olusola Adebiyi – an African Storyteller.

On World Book Day the children of CHS came to school dressed as their favourite character. To take part in the fun reading related activities, the children donated a book for the school’s third book drive in aid of The Venture Centre (a local children’s community centre).  The Year 1 children also had the opportunity to visit Waterstone’s, Notting Hill Gate, to see the fantastic window display which had been put together to showcase the wonderful reading work that goes on within the school.

It was a very successful week and Chepstow House School is pleased to announce that their first ever Read-a-thon raised over £9000 for their school charity, Real Action.  This amazing total reflects both the children’s passion for reading and the loyal support shown by Chepstow House School parents.
