Friends of Chepstow House are delighted to be supporting Evelina London Children’s Allergy Research Appeal

Allergy is widespread and affects approximately 1 in 4 of the population in the UK and up to 30-35% of the world's population at some time in their lives. In the UK, it is estimated that up to 50% of Children have an allergic condition.

An allergy is the immune system’s excessive response to what would normally be a harmless substance. These substances include food, pollen, animals, mould, medicine, latex and house dust mites. Eczema and Asthma are also symptoms of allergy.

Allergic reactions can range from wheezing, itching, coughing and sneezing through to vomiting and Anaphylaxis, which in severe cases, can be life threatening.

The Children’s Allergy Research Department at Evelina London Children’s Hospital is the largest of its kind in Europe. Headed by Professor Gideon Lack, they have an international reputation for leading the field in studying allergies in children. Their research focuses on the rise of allergies in recent times and the development of strategies to both treat and prevent allergic diseases in children.

Friends of Chepstow House are delighted to be supporting this incredibly worthwhile cause to continue their ground-breaking studies into preventing allergies.

Evelina London Children’s Hospital needs our support towards raising 1.7million to fund a purpose built Children’s Allergy Clinical Research Facility which will include:

  • 10 study bay areas for children to undergo tests and observations during the trials
  • A separate examination room for clinicians to see patients away from the open-plan study bay area;
  • A nurses station in the heart of the facility to closely monitor patients as they undergo tests
  • A play area for children
